Abstract:

Fullerenes, especially C60, exhibit great potential applications in biology field, due to their excellent antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor and other properties. Many water-soluble fullerene derivatives have been designed, synthesized and used as photo-dynamic therapy agents, antiviral agents, bioimaging agents, drug carriers and so on. This review focuses on the usage of water-soluble fullerene derivatives in biomedical field in recent years. The first half gives the preparation of water-soluble fullerene derivatives themselves with covalent bonds and non-covalent bonds. In the second half, myriad applications of water-soluble fullerene derivatives in biomedical field are introduced.

GLAUCOMA AND ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Bentham Science observes World Glaucoma Week from 8th to 15th March, 2018, with the world and presents full support for the victims of glaucoma through publishing the latest research developments to combat this dangerous eye disease. Glaucoma is a widely feared eye problem because it causes irreversible blindness. Eye researchers and ophthalmologists have mostly attributed glaucoma to the increase in intraocular pressure, i.e. the increase in fluid pressure inside the eye.

However there are cases where the glaucoma patients had normal intraocular pressure, which suggests that there are other factors that can cause or enhance the risk of contracting this disease. Researchers from the Ophthalmology Unit of the University of Rome Tor Vergata have recently discovered that the patients of Alzheimer’s were often found susceptible of getting glaucoma in their eyes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in the elderly that hampers memory and understanding.

Both these neurodegenerative diseases were found to have very similar risk factors and often co-existed in the older people. The research is an important revelation and opens doors for future studies and possible progress in finding cure for both Alzheimer’s disease and glaucoma.

The research entitled, Glaucoma and Alzheimer Disease: One Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disease of the Brain, is published in the Bentham Science journal, Current Neuropharmacology.

Innovations to Control the Environment for Persons with Movement Disorders: Support in Home Care

Abstract:

 This review focuses on recent innovations and patents with the aim to allow people with movement disorders to control their environment. This particularly includes different technologies for input devices to control computers and other electronic equipment used by persons with movement disorders, enabling the empowerment of this user group. The control of such devices can be the key to social inclusion and mean improved social contact with others, access of information or possibility to work. In this paper, several patents and innovations are described that enable such control, divided into the groups; Input devices in form of switches and touchscreens, Inertia and inclinometer sensors, Voice control and Gesture control. Also methods allowing monitoring and classification of physical activity, i.e. assisting to alarm in case of a fall and systems assisting in rehabilitation at home, are included, as are video games aimed to promote physical activity.
