“Motives Underlying Healthy and Unhealthy Eating Among University Students in Mauritius”

Journal Name: Current Nutrition & Food Science

Author(s): Ruvina Seebun, Fawzi M. Mahomoodally, Anwar H. Subratty, Deerajen Ramasawmy.

Abstract:

Panoply of influences operates to shape particular food choices. Thus, probing into the drivers of people’s healthy food choices is primordial to addressing the public health issue of obesity. The aim of the current study was to investigate the factors that influence University students’ choice for healthy and unhealthy foods. For the cross-sectional study, data using a structured questionnaire were collected from a stratified sample of 370 students at the University of Mauritius. Both descriptive and inferential statistical tools namely factor analysis, Pearson correlations and independent sample t-tests were used for data analysis. Choice decisions were affected by various factors. Students who attached significantly more importance to health, weight control and natural content ate more healthily as opposed to those who were influenced by the social & physical factor. Decisions to choose foods varied significantly with respect to gender. Girls considered factors such as health, weight control, convenience and attitude to be more important and ate more healthily as opposed to boys (p < 0.05). Health benefits derived from foods were perceived as the predominant food motive for students believed that their current diets were nutritionally adequate. These results are salient for health professionals and suggest that interventions should be geared to increase awareness about the nutritional inadequacy of diets consumed by University students and should specifically target boys. To the best of one’s knowledge, this is the only explicit research on food motives of University of Mauritius students.

PRESS RELEASE – Relation of key determinants affecting mental health disorders in greater mekong subregion

This article by Dr. Manndy Nget and Dr. Kasorn Muijeen is published in Current Psychiatry Reviews, Volume 13, 2017

ASEAN integration is likely to bring about a substantial change to this area in the new era; it can subsequently cause many problems as well. The characteristic differences among the GMS member countries in terms of trade and investment, social and cultural values, medical information and technology, and the living and work environment have become major problems associated with mental health disorders, which are usually identified as depression, stress, and substance abuse.

This literature review aims to identify and review the relationships among the key determinants affecting the mental health disorders of the GMS people. The study showed that the increasing number of mental health disorders has become a big burden for national healthcare expenditure. Therefore, the strong relationship among mental health, mental disorders, economic status, and financial issues has been addressed in many studies. Financial issues have become a major key to the wide prevalence of mental disorders in the GMS. In addition, health issues related to mental health disorders are also caused by the environment and other related factors and therefore a stable and a well-balanced environment is an indicator of healthy mental status. Moreover, the factors contributing to mental health disorders are significantly correlated with social inequalities, whereby high social inequalities bring about extreme mental risk. The economic, healthcare, social and environment problems in the GMS area should be solved through policy development, follow-up planning, strategic implementation, and collaboration among all related sectors, especially in terms of the economy, the environment, and healthcare.

Consequently, there are four key determinants that affect people’s lives, especially in terms of mental health, thus leading to mental health disorders: 1) economic; 2) healthcare; 3) environmental; and 4) social. Globalization and urbanization should follow sustainable development suggestion and concerns about the population’s health, especially regarding mental health.

Social Support Crucial for Health in Old Age

‘Man is a social animal’ – this statement has become a cliché over time but still holds its significance. The reason is that it is as true in practice as it is in theory. We see in our surroundings that the people who have families around them who care for them are visibly more satisfied than the ones who are alone. Apart from family if they are getting support from their friends, neighbors and society, then they find it much easier to maintain their health and wellbeing.

This topic has gained much attention from the social scientists as well as medical and life scientists, as they are curious to find the social factors and their correlations that are vital for human ageing, morbidity and mortality. The findings have been clear that the people who were old and had little access to others and social support were found more susceptible to ailments and were leading rapidly towards death. Whereas those older ones who had people near them to talk to them, hear and address their problems, provide emotional as well as social support, were more satisfied and more capable of keeping healthy for long.

One of the important researches finding this correlation is published in the journal, Current Aging Science journal and can be read here:

Lighting Times in Hospitals Affect Patients’ Health

Human beings are used to a cycle of light timings with light in the day and dark in the night. Accordingly, our mind and body feel active in daytime and laze afterwards. When we are exposed to light in inappropriate hours we tend to get irritated and find it hard to respond properly. Same phenomenon can get exacerbated if we are ill, as our body and mind is already fighting diseases and cannot bear extra agony. Yet this is a common sight in hospitals, medical centers and nursing homes that they are shining bright twenty-four hours – especially in the I.C.U. and other sensitive sections.

It has been ignored mostly but now researchers are paying attention to the potential ill-effects this untimely lighting has on our circadian rhythm, i.e. our biological clock. Scientists from University of Colorado suggest that if the hospitals, medical centers and the likes control their light intensity, duration and sunlight exposure than they may help patients recover quicker than otherwise. This subject is wide and welcoming for further research that can help improve the conditions.

How To Beat Your Booze?

Holiday season is at its peak and one day after the other parties keep coming up. Even if you have planned for it, get-togethers are hard to avoid. To add, winter is at its full swing. All these reasons are good enough to make you drink alcohol far more than your normal days. Drinking beyond limits can be devastating for health and needs to be checked strictly. But, are there any proper measures one can take?

drinks on a bar

There are some basic tips that can help. To state a few:

  1. Write down the benefits of quitting alcohol. It will serve as a reminder and motivating factor.
  2. Note down your last drinking incident and also how much you had.
  3. Set your drinking limit and try your best to keep below it.
  4. Try to give gaps in days when you drink. The longer your gap, the better it will prove for you.
  5. Never use alcohol with empty tummy.
  6. Drink non-alcoholic beverages as much as you can; especially as intervals between your next pegs.
  7. Most importantly, learn to say no to your friends and peers. Never feel obliged when you get the offer to have more.

Enjoy your life but keep in control!
