Book Highlights | How to Restore Public Trust in our Universities?

9781681087498-1.jpg

With declining societal confidence and diminishing value of a university degree, the book Redefining University Leadership for the 21st Century could not come at a more opportune time. The ever-increasing tuition fees and ballooning student debts, bloated administrative costs and student dissatisfaction should sound alarm bells for the viability of universities. When technology and artificial intelligence make knowledge rapidly redundant, how can universities future-proof their graduates in this fast-changing world of the fourth industrial revolution and artificial intelligence

In this brilliantly insightful book, the authors pin-point the market failures and the management practices that have led to the erosion of public confidence in universities. They examine the consequences of market failures caused by the marketization of higher education: an oversupply of graduates, mismatch between qualifications and needed skills, student disillusionment, and the diminishing return on investments by students and their families. The marketable “excellence” of universities is artificially constructed on ranking metrics which neglect the core academic mission. Instead of serving the needs of society, they are focused primarily on achieving high ranks in league tables. Success in these rankings lulls them into a false sense of security and complacency. Poor management and bloated administration are major causes of high fees and student unaffordability. The crisis in college costs is eroding the democratic promise of higher education.

With local student demand flattening and graduate employability declining, some universities find themselves in financial stress. Escalating tuition, rising student debts, the unbundling of higher education services and the rapid advance of learning technologies mean that higher education is ripe for disruption. In their race to expand and pursue ranking excellence, universities have driven up costs and lost focus on their teaching mission. They are now unsustainably over-extended and unaffordable for much of the population. The commodification of higher education in the last century has made universities more vulnerable to disruptive competition. To read out more, please visit: https://ebooks.benthamscience.com/book-highlights/190104001/

Bentham Science | What Sets Our Research Publishing Apart

Research activity has been expanding exponentially, with universities, research centers, corporates, labs, teams of scientists, tirelessly working on myrid research projects, in countless areas, worldwide. In order to get these research studies published, researchers are constantly looking for well known scholarly journals, which are indexed in reputed directories and indices and have a reliable peer-review, approval and publishing process. However, picking a reputable journal can be challenging. At Bentham Science Publishers, we conduct a reliable peer-review approval process on each piece of research to ensure quality.

Bentham Science publishes over 100 scholarly journals and has a collection of more than 700 eBooks on various topics related to science, technology, and medicine, that are included in reputable indexing agencies like Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed (MEDLINE) and others. Bentham Science also has several journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports of Clarivate Analytics. The titles with rankings can be viewed here.

Bentham Science is also a member of COPE. This organization defines the standards for ethical publishing practices, and works with journals to ensure authors, editors, and publishers all match their set standards.

A large number of experienced and established international scientists are associated with Bentham Science journals, as editorial board members, advisory board members and reviewers. They remain closely involved by providing their constant feedback, guidance and insights to make their journals stay on track in terms of industry standards and best practices on ethics. The journals follow a transparent peer-review process for all the article manuscripts submitted for publishing. Independent reviewers assess the content and research in the submissions and provide their suggestions. Most Bentham Science reviewers have their profiles available on Publons, which is a trusted platform where reviewers join to get recognition for their reviewing efforts.

The authors who have worked with Bentham Science, appreciate their processes and reliability for publishing their work on a trusted platform.

PROCESSING CYCLE

The flowchart given below explains the manuscript submission process at Bentham Science. Once the manuscript is submitted for publication, it is subjected to screening, quality assessment, Plagiarism check, reviewing, and further production processing activities involving language assessment, figure improvement, preparation of proofs and incorporation of required corrections.

Each step in the process is designed to ensure Bentham Science readers are given information that is reliable, ethically-sourced, well-researched, and accurate.

BENTHAM SCIENCE FREE TRIAL IN AHEPA HOSPITAL-LIBRARY (FREE TRIAL ENDS ON FEBRUARY 15, 2019)

AHEPA’s commitment to education has been well documented throughout its history. Over $4 million is endowed at the local, district and national levels toward the use of scholarships and a half-million dollars is awarded annually. Thousands of young men and women have benefited as recipients of AHEPA scholarships at these various levels. The most famous recipient, perhaps, is ABC News’ Host of This Week George Stephanopoulos.

The scholarship program at the national level is administered by the AHEPA National Educational Foundation. It offers scholarships to a wide variety of students. Recipients are: traditional and non-traditional students; seminarians, including those entering Holy Cross Greek School of Theology; and high school seniors, college and post-graduate students who are looking to become tomorrow’s leaders.

The preservation of Hellenic or Classical Studies programs on college campuses is an important issue for the AHEPA Educational Foundation. A subcommittee of the Foundation, the Hellenic Cultural Commission, actively works to support the study of the Classics at universities.

In addition, educational programs such as “Journey to Greece” and Washington Internships are sponsored by the Foundation.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the sixth oldest and among the most highly ranked tertiary education institutions in Greece. It is named after the philosopher Aristotle, who was born in Stageira, about 55 km east of Thessaloniki. It is the largest university in Greece and in the Balkans. Its campus covers 230,000 square metres in the centre of Thessaloniki, with additional educational and administrative facilities elsewhere. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1925 during the premiership of Alexandros Papanastassiou and was legislated under Law 3341/14-6-25. It was the second Greek university to be founded after the University of Athens, which was established in 1837. The university was built on top of the remains of what had once been the Jewish cemetery in Thessaloniki, until the cemetery’s tragic destruction during the Nazi occupation.

SISSA Library

The SISSA Library contains more than 22.000 books, 18.000 bound journals, all SISSA theses (Ph.D. and Magister) and currently subscribes to about 150 printed and more than 6000 online scientific journals. During the most of the year, the Library is open from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m., and can be accessed by SISSA registered users 24 hours a day. In summer (July 1 to August 31) the Library is open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday closed), but users can access it using the self-check system for loans and returns whilst the library is closed. This operation works only if library users have the appropriate library card “badge” (with photo) and if it has been registered in the SISSA library database. If users don’t have the appropriate badge they can go to the SISSA post office to receive it. Once in possession of the proper badge, users are requested to come to the SISSA library loan desk and ask librarians to add it to the SISSA database.

University of Botswana library

The University of Botswana library has been in existence since 1971 when the first thousand volumes were housed in an unused church building in the village of Gaborone. The first official building was opened in 1986, which was two stories tall and contained only five computers. In 2001, the library moved to a new building, more than tripling its size.
